چکیده

An alternative method for detecting the production of slime by coagulase negative staphylococci was compared with the routinely used Christensen method on 124 isolates ofcoagulase negative staphylococci from carriage sites, blood cultures, and infected peritoneal dialysis fluids. The alternative method requires the use ofa specially prepared solid medium-brain heart infusion broth, supplemented with 5% sucrose, and Congo red stain. Of the 124 tests, there was complete agreement between methods in 107 and only one strain was clearly negative by Christensen's method while positive on Congo red agar. The Congo red method is rapid, sensitive, and reproducible and has the advantage that colonies remain viable on the medium. It is also not subject to interbatch variation ofmedia which sometimes affects the reproducibility of the Christensen method.

Evaluation of Different Phenotypic Techniques for the Detection of Slime Produced by Bacteria Isolated from Clinical Specimens

UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION : Microorganisms use various strategies for their survival in both the environment and in humans. Slime production by bacteria is one such mechanism by which microbes colonize on the indwelling prosthetic devices and form biofilms. Infections caused by such microorganisms are difficult to treat as the biofilm acts as a shield and protects microbes against antimicrobial a...

Slime production and antibiotic susceptibility in staphylococci isolated from clinical samples.

A total of 187 isolates from several clinical specimens were identified to species level as 129 Staphylococcus aureus strains and 58 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) strains by the API Staph System (Biomerieux). Slime production was detected both by the conventional Christensen's method as well as by the Congo red agar method. Seventy-two strains of staphylococci isolates (38.5%) were fou...

Comparison of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from blood cultures as a true bacteremia agent and contaminant in terms of slime production and methicillin resistance.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to determine the species distribution, slime activity, and methicillin resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from blood cultures as either contaminants or true bacteremia agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, 13.268 blood culture samples sent to our laboratory from various clinics during a two-year period were examined in term...
